Origin of the Name San Francisco

There are two versions given as to the origin of this name:

a.) In the early part of the 18th century, the legendary hero of Bohol, Francisco Dagohoy, used to stay at sitio Lawis and Tabon. These sitios are located at the northernmost part of the barangay and these places were once known for the abundance of marine products. It was said that Dagohoy frequented these places for his fishing ventures. People believed that Dagohoy, who was a devotee of Saint Francis Javier, the Apostle of the Indies, gave the name San Francisco in order to honor his Patron Saint.

b.) In 1890, the Spanish friar, who was then at that time, the town executive, called for an assembly wherein all barangays which were recognized by the Spanish authorities were required to send a representative. The barangay’s representative was Modesto Evangelista. One of the purpose of the assemble was that each barrio will be given an image of a saint and the late Modesto was given the image of Saint Francis Javier, so the name San Francisco was given to the whole barangay. It may be recalled that prior to the naming of the said barrio to San Francisco, it was first called Tabon. The name “Tabon” was derived from the name of white birds which were of great abundance in the area. The tabon birds used to lay eggs and took shelter at sitio Tabon and Lawis. These sitios are considered the most progressive in this barangay for they are ideal for land and marine agriculture.
